I’ll never forget the day that I took my wife’s hand and promised to love and cherish her for the rest of my life. I meant what I said, but I certainly didn’t comprehend all the implications of that commitment. And I still don’t fully understand this wonderful relationship that we’ve enjoyed.
God created the marriage relationship between a man and a woman to be a wonder-filled mystery. He made us different so that we would find our completion in one other. Marriage is the deepest of all human relationships, yet it paints a beautiful portrait of our intimate ties with God. It’s filled with love until death and produces much needed grace in times of hurt. Humility is essential and creates a highway for communication, one upon which forgiveness frequently travels.
Apostle Paul wrote about this unique bond in Ephesians 5:31 – 32, “As the Scriptures say, ‘A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of how God has made Christ and the church one.”
The relationship between a man and woman in marriage create an image of the incredible unity between Jesus and His people. When I think of how much God’s loves me now and His great compassion before I came to know Him, it boggles my mind. What a mystery!
A mystery indicates there’s much that we don’t know. There’s plenty to learn about this wonder-filled mystery. Yet, there’s one thing that’s certain. The Bible is very clear about it. Immediately after describing the husband/wife relationship, the Apostle Paul wrote, “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband” (Ephesians 5:33).
Love and respect: they are the two ingredients that produce unity in this mysterious union.

Ephesians : Chapter 5
28)  In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29)  After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30)  for we are members of his body. 31)  “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[c] 32)  This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33)  However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
